Rep. Boucher: "Voted Against the Healthcare Bill Because its Deep Cuts to Medicare Would Harm Seniors"

Tuesday, July 20, 2010

Chatham, VA – Incumbent Democrat, Rep. Boucher running for re-election in Virginia's 9th Congressional District released an ad touting his vote against government run healthcare. In the ad, Rep. Boucher said he voted against the bill because, "it's deep cuts to Medicare would harm seniors." (see here)

Rep. Perriello promised he would consult "his constituents, conscience and do what's best" when he voted for the the massive government takeover of healthcare. The majority of the people Rep. Perriello represents are opposed to the the bill (see here) because of the deep cuts to Medicare.

The Washington Post reported last year, well before Rep. Perriello voted for the healthcare bill, that it would "slash Medicare by $500B in future spending" and "sharply reduce benefits for some senior citizens and could jeopardize access to care for millions of others (see here)."

If you're a senior who depends on Medicare, you're probably asking yourself, "Why would Rep. Perriello vote for a bill that his constituents are against and cuts Medicare by $500B?"

Republican Congressional Candidate in Virginia's Fifth District, Robert Hurt, released the following statement:

"We always knew that Obama's takeover of healthcare would add more taxes to struggling middle class families, crush small businesses and drive jobs overseas. Now Rep. Perriello's fellow Democrat Rep. Boucher is reaffirming the sad truth that Perriello has tried to hide from us - this bill will cut Medicare by $500B and it will hurt our seniors.

I've opposed the government takeover of healthcare from day one because it is a job killer and a huge tax increase on middle class families and small businesses. We can't afford Rep. Perriello's tax increases any longer and our seniors certainly can't afford a $500B cut to Medicare.

Once elected, I'll go to Washington and fight for policies that create jobs, cut taxes on struggling Virginians and help our seniors."
