To the editor:
I would like to offer a clarification on a reference made in a story
you ran recently on the Fifth District contest for the Republican
nomination.
In the article, Bob Lewis, of The Associated Press, refers to
campaign money raised by several of the candidates. In his references to
candidates Laurence Verga and Michael McPadden, he lumps into their
fund-raising the amounts the candidates have donated to themselves. In
Verga’s case, that is more than $250,000, and $200,000 in the case of
McPadden.
Robert Hurt’s fund-raising of about $400,000 (all from diverse
supporters) dwarfs the comparable figures for Verga and McPadden —
neither of whom has even come close to raising $100,000 from supporters.
The fund-raising vitality shown by Hurt is one of many important
ingredients of the tremendous enthusiasm of his supporters who believe
fervently that he is the best candidate to defeat the current
congressman.
Thank you for allowing me to put these figures in perspective.
