Update from Robert

Tuesday, May 04, 2010

Dear fellow Republicans:

I wanted to take a quick break from the trail to give you an update on our campaign and the great progress we have made.

As a Senator in the Virginia General Assembly my first priority is to my constituents, and doing the job I was elected to do. Of course, a 60 day session is not always conducive to simultaneously running for Congress, however in Richmond this General Assembly session, we had a similar situation to what's going on in Washington today! Out of control government spending and huge deficits. We started the session with a $4.2 billion dollar budget shortfall. In order to solve the problem, I worked with conservative Republicans from across Virginia to balance our budget and cut government spending. With the strong leadership of Governor Bob McDonnell, the Virginia General Assembly cut government spending and has promoted an environment where small businesses can start hiring again.

Since the legislative Session, we've been working 7 days a week to win the Republican primary on June 8th. As I've traveled the district, I've heard the same message over and over--that Virginians are tired of the taxing and spending, they're tired of Washington politicians like Tom Perriello telling us one thing and Nancy Pelosi another. Although I represent one third of the Fifth Congressional District, I've received an incredible amount of support from Virginians throughout the entire Fifth District.

On March 23, we handed in over 3,500 signatures to get my name on the June 8th primary ballot -that's more than double what any of our opponents submitted. We had a district-wide grassroots effort to help us achieve that goal with over 120 volunteers obtaining signatures from every one of the 22 localities in the Fifth District. As a result, my name will be at the top of the ballot on Election Day.

During the first fundraising quarter of this year, despite my time in Richmond with the legislative session, we raised almost three times as much as any of my opponents and we were able to bring our total number of donors to over 750. My friends, fundraising is an important part of a campaign because it demonstrates a commitment and investment by voters in the campaign's ability to prevail in November.

Just in the last two weeks, we have brought the campaign to Charlottesville, Farmville and spent a considerable time touring Bedford, Franklin, Brunswick, Charlotte, Lunenburg and Mecklenburg Counties. We are especially grateful for the two days we spent with Senator Frank Ruff and Delegate Tommy Wright, both of whom have endorsed our campaign. Throughout our tour, we heard from hard working Virginians and small business owners who are concerned about the current state of our country and the future they're leaving their children. I share those same concerns and I pledge that I'll go to Washington to fight for conservative principles that will restore growth to our economy, cut wasteful government spending and balance our budget.

We are running the kind of campaign that will defeat Tom Perriello on November 2nd. We are grateful for all of the volunteers who are working on phone banks, putting up yards signs and holding meet and greets all across the district. Between now and June 8th, we'll continue to work hard every day to build on our fundraising and grass roots success.

With only 34 days to go we need your help now more than ever. Please contact our staff as soon as possible to help push us over the finish line on June 8th. We need your help with making phone calls, volunteering at events, holding meet and greets, writing letters to the editor and getting up yards signs. Jordan Dix is representing our campaign in the northern part of the district(Jordan@roberthurtforcongress.com, 434-203-1899) and Julia Mayhew is representing our campaign in the southern portion of the district (julia@roberthurtforcongress.com 434-432-4600). Please call or email them and get involved with our campaign immediately.

I look forward to working with you as I continue to travel the district during the last 34 days before the primary. We have a lot of hard work before us to win on June 8th, but we've put together a strong grassroots team and it continues to grow every day. I'm confident that we'll win in June and we will all work together to defeat Tom Perriello in November.

As always, please feel free to reach out to our campaign at info@roberthurtforcongress.com or visit our website and sign up for specific grass roots activities (www.roberhurtforcongress.com/volunteer).

Regards,

Robert Hurt
